Recyclable Films for Sustainable Packaging
Resource-efficient and future-oriented packaging solutions

Sustainable Packaging Films Made from Recycled Plastic

Recyclable films are designed so that they can be collected, sorted and mechanically recycled as efficiently as possible after use. tbs-pack offers recyclable PE films and packaging films with recycled content for a wide range of applications. Together, we determine which material structure, protective properties and recycled content are best suited to your product and packaging process.

What Are Recyclable Films?

Recyclable packaging films are designed to ensure that their materials are as compatible as possible with existing collection, sorting and recycling processes. Films made predominantly from a single type of plastic, such as polyethylene (PE) or polypropylene (PP), can provide an important basis for recyclability.

However, recyclability is not determined by the base material alone. Barriers, colours, printing inks, adhesives, closures and labels can also affect how effectively packaging can be sorted and recycled. The entire packaging structure must therefore always be considered.

Recyclable, Recycled or Made with Recycled Content?

These terms describe different properties:

  • Recyclable means that packaging is designed for collection, sorting and material recycling.
  • Recycled means that a material has already undergone a recycling process.
  • Film with recycled content contains a defined proportion of reprocessed plastic.

Recyclable film does not therefore automatically contain recycled material. Conversely, film with recycled content may not be fully recyclable in every configuration.

What Are the Benefits of Recyclable Films?

Designing Packaging for Recycling

A simplified material structure can improve the sortability and recyclability of packaging. Mono-material solutions can help avoid material combinations that are difficult to separate.

Using Recycled Materials Effectively

Using suitable recycled materials can reduce the need for newly produced plastic and return existing raw materials to the material cycle. The possible recycled content depends on the application, technical requirements and applicable regulations.

Maintaining Product Protection and Processability

Depending on their design, recyclable films can offer excellent sealing, shrinking, barrier and processing properties. The film must be selected to match the product, packaging machinery and required level of protection.

Preparing for Future Packaging Requirements

The European Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) introduces increasingly stringent requirements for packaging recyclability and the use of post-consumer recycled materials. Whether a specific packaging solution meets the relevant requirements must be assessed on the basis of its complete structure, intended use and the applicable evaluation criteria.

Frequently Asked Questions About Recyclable Films

Recyclable film is designed so that it can be collected, sorted and mechanically recycled after use. Its recyclability depends not only on the base material but also on the complete packaging structure, including coatings, barriers, adhesives, printing inks, labels and closures.

Mono-material films made predominantly from one type of plastic, such as polyethylene (PE) or polypropylene (PP), can provide good conditions for recycling. However, the entire packaging structure and the available collection, sorting and recycling infrastructure must be considered when assessing recyclability.

PCR film contains post-consumer recycled plastic obtained from products that have already been used, collected and processed. Recyclable film, by contrast, describes packaging designed for collection, sorting and material recycling. A film can therefore be recyclable without containing PCR material.

Film with recycled content contains a defined proportion of processed recycled plastic. This may be post-consumer recycled material (PCR) or post-industrial recycled material (PIR). The possible recycled content depends on the application, technical requirements and applicable regulations.

Recyclability is an important requirement of the EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR). However, a film cannot be described as PPWR-compliant based on recyclability alone. Compliance must be assessed for the complete packaging, its intended use and the requirements applicable to the specific packaging category.

Yes, recyclable films can be used for food packaging if the specific film complies with the legal requirements for its intended food-contact application. Not every recyclable film or recycled plastic is automatically suitable for direct food contact. Suitability must be confirmed by the relevant declarations of compliance and supporting documentation.

Modern recyclable packaging films can provide excellent mechanical strength, sealing performance and processing properties. Their actual durability depends on the material, film thickness, packaging structure and intended application. The film should therefore be selected and tested according to the required level of product protection.

The possible percentage of recycled content depends on the type of film, its intended use, technical performance, appearance and applicable regulations. Depending on the specification, Castelli®-Circular film can be manufactured with up to 70% recycled content. Other ratios are available on request.
